Working with the Translation Editor
The Translation Editor is the core of Translation Center. It lets you search for translations, manage keys and perform the actual translation work. While translating, it provides useful meta information and assists translators and managers to quickly translate content without losing focus:

The Translation Editor can be split up into three segments
- Search and key navigation
- Source and target language windows
1. Search and key navigation
Finding keys that need to be translated or reviewed is one of the most important tasks. The Translation Editor supports various search modes:
Simply search for occurrences in key names and translation copy by typing the words or phrases you are looking for, e.g. something or something new. To search for exact matches, set your query into double quotes like so: “some exact match”.
Unsure about the exact key-name? Use an asterisk as a wildcard to generalize your search query. Doing so, some*key will match some.key as well as some.new.key.
To filter search results by a specific Tag, simply type tag: into the search field, e.g. tag:my-feature. After typing tag: a list of available tags will be shown to choose from.
You can also search only for key names or tags by typing key:your-key or tag:your-tag.
The search only finds translations within the search locale, selected on the left side of the search field.
For more complex queries switch to the Advanced Search. It will give you more search fields that allow you a finer control over your results. Here you can also activate case-sensitive matching.
You can order the search results the following way:
- Best match
- Key name (A > Z)
- Key name (Z > A)
- Last update
Besides providing a search string, you can also filter results based on several criteria:
- Translation state (translated, untranslated)
- Verification state (verified, unverified)
- Excluded state (marked as excluded, not marked as excluded)
- Pluralization (pluralized, unpluralized)
You can also combine filters, e.g. to find all verified translations for pluralized keys.
At the top and next to each key you will see checkboxes. Those can be used to select multiple keys to be able to perform a batch action on them. You currently have the following batch actions available:
- Add multiple keys to a Job
- Add Tags
- Delete keys (Note that this will delete the whole key and not just its translations)
2. Source and target language windows
You will have to select a locale from the upper drop-down to select your source language for the translation and the locale of your target language for the window below.
Copy source translation
You can use the above icon to copy the content from your source translation window into your target language window.
Use this button to discard your changes and revert to the previous content.
If this particular key, or a list of keys doesn’t require a translation in your target language you can select the Exclude checkbox
The Translation Editor has great support for hotkeys, which can speed up working in the editor, especially with multiple keys. For a list of all supported keyboard shortcuts just visit ? → Keyboard Shortcuts or type ? on your keyboard.
If you are working on a pluralized key, you can quickly jump through all plural forms by selecting it from the drop-down above the translation input field.
To save a translation, click Save or use the appropriate keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+s or Cmd+s).
Save & Next
You can activate the Save & Next mode by selecting it from the drop-down next to the Save button. When Save & Next is enabled, saving a translation will automatically load the next search result in the Translation Editor. This speeds up translating a set of keys tremendously. If the key you’re currently editing supports pluralization, saving a translation in Save & Next mode will automatically open the next available plural form in the editor.
Verifying & Unverifying translations
To verify or unverify a translation, use the Verify and Unverify buttons next to the Save button. This will also save any changes you made to the translation.
When the Save & Next mode is enabled, verifying and unverifying will also load the next search result afterward. For more information see our article on Verification and Proofreading.
You can select Minor Change to make a small change (e.g. adding missing punctuation) that will not update the verification status.
At the top of the navigation bar you see a bar of icons with the following options:
- Edit Key
- Delete Key
- Duplicate Key
- Link to this page
You will also find an Add Key button that will allow you to manually create a new key in your project.
Below that you will find a series of tabs with a lot of useful information that provide context and helpful tools at your fingertips:
Find key descriptions, screenshots for further context, links to Context-View and much more in the sidebar.
Discuss possible questions with team members right next to the actual translation.
The most relevant hits from the built-in Translation Memory are accessible in real-time.
See all previous versions of a translation in the History tab. You can also restore a previous translation that way.
Looking for all translations for a key? You can find them here too and open each one in the Translation Editor by clicking the Open in Editor button.
The sidebar will show you matches from attached glossaries right in the sidebar and apply the correct translation for terms with one click.
The sidebar lets you request and apply a machine translation easily.
Here you will find some meta information about the key such as author, type, creation date and IDs.
How to upgrade to the new editor
We recommend upgrading to the new version of the editor. New features and improvements will only be available in the new version of the editor.
For Master users and Manager users
If you’re still using the old editor and want to upgrade to the new version, simply go to your Account Details, and open the settings dialog (Edit Account Details). There you can activate the new editor for your account. When enabled, all users of your account will be able to use the new version of the editor:
For Developer users and Translator users
Please note that only users with the role “Master User” and “Manager” can enable the new editor for the account. In order to upgrade your account to the new editor, please contact a Manager user or the Master user of your account.
